Fortune Cookies

This was our last official Yah Mon activity for the summer. We discovered that making fortune cookies in a toaster oven is a lot more labor intensive than we expected. That, and the recipe needed almost double the flour in order for them to be thick enough.

Do NOT try this at home, unless you have a lot of time.

We did have some interesting fortunes, though.

Monday, July 11, we will be creating and playing a board game, Mu Torere, that originated in New Zealand. European settlers to the area discovered that though it looked simple, it was not easy to win against the Maori peoples. Sometimes up to 10 settlers played at once against one Maori player and still did not win.

Question:

What year was the first recorded win by a settler against a Maori player?

This answer is worth one raffle ticket.

The movie on Friday, July 15, will be Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, based on the books by J.R. Tolkein. This was filmed in New Zealand.

Question:

Who joined Frodo on his quest to destroy the One Ring to end the Dark Lords reign? (there were 8)

This answer is worth two raffle tickets.

Indonesian Batik

Yah mon! (You Are Here Mondays) begins today @ 3:30pm

Open to all youth entering 7th-12th grades.

Today we will be learning about an art form from Indonesia called Batik. The word Batik means "wax written". To do this in the traditional form would involve using hot wax and dyes and lots of time.
We will be experimenting with a faster version using glue and a spray-on fabric paint.

All materials will be provided for youth to make their very own Batik as well a websites to learn more about this old art form.

Teen Tech Week Book Trailers and CHALLENGE

As you can see, I've posted two book trailers created by teens and voted as Best use of Audio, and Best Overall. I will post the Best use of Video when I find the link (it is for "There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale - and I think it was submitted by Spirit Lake Library).

BUT we should be proud here at MPL..... our video for Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder was in the running and received a respectable number of votes in the Best use of Video category.

TEENS: You can create your very own book trailer and make one of your favorite books enticing. We will be using the library’s flipcam to film and Jaycut, a free video editing software, to create one or many BOOK TRAILERS on Saturday, March 5, 2011 from 12:00-3:00pm.

Yes, it is almost here!!! The release date for this anxiously awaited book is August 24. We don't have any control over the mail, but we have ordered it. A list has already been added to the computer entry, so if you want to hop on board...have at it!

Initially we are ordering 5 copies, with the potential of a couple more. If you just happen to buy your own copy, read it and don't care to keep it, we would love the donations!

Remember, the library is a great place to donate books you no longer want to crowd your shelves with and Young Adult books are highly appreciated (I don't get very many!).

Kimi's Book Review of Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice starts off with Fireheart and Graystripe finishing up their vigil. The vigil was all night because they had just become warriors, which is a big honor because they are no longer apprentices. Shortly after they go to a gathering, which is where all of the clans meet once a month on the night of the full moon, they learn that one of the four clans of the forest has been driven out by Shadowclan. Their leader Bluestar gives the new warriors the task of bringing Windclan back to the forest, for she believes that there should be four clans in the forest, not three. Fireheart and Graystripe go to find Windclan, and eventually they convince them to return to their territory. After getting an ominous message from Windclan’s medicine cat that there would be an unnecessary death that day, they set off to go home. Fireheart, Graystripe, and some members of Windclan went through Riverclan territory and get caught by a patrol; in the end of the fight, a Riverclan apprentice gets killed, and the evil cat Tigerclaw watches as Fireheart almost gets killed. Shortly after, Fireheart and Graystripe get apprentices. They Thunderclan gets plagued by green cough, which Bluestar gets. Bluestar’s green cough turns into white cough, and she ends up loosing a life from it. While she was sick, Cinderpaw goes to deliver a message to Tigerclaw that Bluestar was sick and gets hits by a monster, also known as a car, on Thunder Path, also known as a road. Due to this, she loses all ability to be a warrior, since her back paw is injured beyond repair. Fireheart ends up getting his nephew from his sister Princess, and takes him back to the clan. Cloudkit gets accepted into the clan after long enough.

The biggest and best literary element in Warriors: Fire and Ice is the plot. If not for plot, this book would be nothing. The plot of the entire series is beginning to unravel in this book, and characterization is strong due to the plot. Imagery is also strong, mainly appearing to the sense of smell and taste with how good a rat tastes and how wonderful it smells. This book is very well written, and I would suggest it to any cat lover who wants to see a well read wonderful cat soap-opera. The theme is probably to consult your wise, almighty clan leader before making a stupid decision, which will lead everyone to wanting to slice one’s eyeballs out and feed them to their prey.

Teen programming and activities start back up this week at your library.

THURSDAY, JAN. 7 @ 4pm we will have our biweekly TAG meeting.
All TEENS are encouraged to come to help with planning for things such as the Summer Reading Program and..... the next Twilight Saga Party - sometime in June to coincide with the release of the movie, Eclipse.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who helped make this party a success!! The teens who planned: Kendahl, Sierra, Maddy, Toni, SheaLa, Aubri, Devon, Makenna, Kiana, Kalyse, Taryn, Carissa, Maria/Heather.... and the ones who pitched in and helped after they arrived..... representing all of our Middle Schools and High Schools.

To all of my adult helpers: Kathryn (Youth Services Supervisor), Jamie (Library Volunteer), Brian (Library Volunteer), Lindsey (Circulation staff), Caralee (Circulation Staff), and Cheryl (PHS Librarian), and to all of our coworkers who supported us and put up with our chaos.

Over 45 youth enjoyed in a costume contest, werewolf relay, crafts and food. AND they donated over 70 cans of food to the Idaho Food Bank, who really appreciated your generosity!!

Sadly, we were so involved, we forgot the camera, so no pics :(

So it looks like an Eclipse party next fall?.......

In the meantime, we have a GINGERBREAD HOUSE decorating coming up on December 10 beginning at 5:00pm. Watch for details and pass it on...

New Moon Party approaches!

Just thought I'd let you all know that the party is now FULL! I am taking a waiting list and will call all participants (who didn't forget to leave their phone numbers!) on Thurs. afternoon to confirm.

We will have a great raffle for items such as a MOVIE TICKET to NEW MOON, books, posters, calendar and other enticing stuff....

Each registrant will get a raffle ticket when they arrive. AND- for each 5 cans of food donated for the Idaho Food Bank, you will get an additional ticket; throughout the evening you will have other opportunities to receive more tickets. PLEASE bring just canned food and make sure it isn't outdated....

I wish we could accommodate more participants, but 40 is A LOT!

This book deserves a five because the author describes the way the protagonist, Kyle, feels in a way that teens can relate to.

Now I'm going to have to read "Kiss of Life" to see if it is as good as "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" by Carrie Ryan (another zombie book).

I want to thank the youth who helped make our Twilight Party such a success!!!!

Tyler, Carissa, Megan, Alyssa, Rose, Michaela, Heather, Piper & Erin

Not only did some of these youth meet weekly to plan this activity, but they were creative and diligent in their efforts.

It is something to be thankful for that a book was their inspiration. Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series has even encouraged new readers. One mom recently commented that she had always had a hard time getting her daughter to read until this series came out.

Thanks to all of the teens who came and enjoyed our library.

Some FAQ's:

1. Do I have to do the challenges in order? NO. Visit with me or one of our other librarians and tell us what you have read. We'll help you find the best place to record the book you read.

2. What is a book of the theme? Any book that fits (even remotely) into the SF, Fantasy, Futuristic, space, time travel genres. Convince me!

3. Do I have to do all of the challenges on the form? NO. You may do any of these up to 2x in any order you wish until you have completed 6.

4. How long does my book review have to be? As short as the few lines on the green book review form to as long as you like. Also, I will publish a link to your review for the teen page if you don't mind!
